Pet Ear Care Center at Cupertino Animal Hospital has always put the welfare of our patients first, whether they are feathered or furred, large or small. We are pleased to announce that 2018 was the year that we became even more effective at diagnosing and treating ear diseases in pets.

What causes ear diseases?

The ear is a complicated part of the body, containing over 100 anatomical structures. There is a whole host of reasons why your pet may suffer from ear problems, including parasites, hormonal or autoimmune issues, or foreign bodies such as grass seeds entering the canal. The anatomical structure of the ear is so complex and delicate that even minor and easily treatable problems can cause ear conditions like chronic discharge, infections, inflammation, or pain.

When to bring your pet for a checkup

Traditional equipment, such as a handheld endoscope, is not enough to properly examine the ear canal. An inaccurate diagnosis leads to inaccurate treatment, which means your pet could be in lifelong pain or discomfort and suffer constant relapses. In some cases, conditions may become chronic, leading to loss of hearing; in the worst case, they could become lifelong or life-threatening.

Cutting edge technology that offers cutting edge treatment

The second announcement is also great news for all pets suffering from ear problems. Our in-house cone beam CT scanner by Xoran Corporation generates high-quality 3D x-rays of a pet’s anatomy, allowing for the diagnosis of disease or injury during your visit to our center. It takes less than a minute to conduct the scan; therefore, if necessary, we can begin urgent treatment right away.

We are pleased to announce that in 2018, we acquired a 4K endoscope by Karl Storz, which helps us see the inside of your pet’s ear with a clarity and definition that is over 100x better than the clarity and definition provided by traditional equipment. It allows us to examine tiny blood vessels and details that are smaller than a pinhead. This state-of-the-art technology enables us to diagnose issues which might not have been possible to see before; with better depth of field, our surgery can be even more precise. The endoscope means we make smaller incisions and conduct less invasive surgery, meaning fewer complications and quicker recovery time for your pet.

We can make a pinpoint diagnosis of ear disease and, based on the outcome of our evaluation, we can offer a custom ear treatment plan for your pet. This results in fewer visits to the vet, less distress for pets, and lower costs for owners. We also offer Piezo surgery, a new surgical technique using an ultrasonic vibrating tip and water rather than using a bone chisel. This kind of surgery is safer, less traumatic, causes little to no bleeding, and greatly accelerates healing times.
